Draft Kings & Queens

Welcome welcome welcome to Year 10 or Year X as the cool kids say. We are back and we kick off this season as we do every year with 10 people......oh right....erm...awkward...err 9 people drafting and either setting themselves for a glorious run to the playoffs or a miserable shit 9 months. Let's look at who y'all picked in draft order.

Rudi

First 5 picks

1st pick with 9 players and let’s be honest….these first 5 picks are incredibly underwhelming. Bruno, Bamford, DCL, Maddison and VVD is fine but like 4th pick fine. Bruno is a big tick, solid first pick but Bamford at 2? Interesting, Maddison at 4 as well feels very high for first pick….again fine for a mid table draft but with only 9 picking 1st this year should have been unfuckwithable but instead it seems it really opened the door for 2nd and 3rd to enjoy a better pick selection.

Next 20

I can’t lie, it’s just underwhelming it’s all just very midtable and centre midfield heavy. I’m not shitting on this squad I’m just saying 1st pick in a league of 9 shouldn’t be picking Bamford 2nd pick, shouldn’t have 7 cm/dmf’s and shouldn’t have JJ Shelvey in there. After pick 6i t’s not until pick 21 do I think yeah, I’d want him in my team which doesn’t mean these are bad players but 1st pick should be the squad you look at and think fuck, he’s nailed on from the top 4 and this squad just doesn’t give me that confidence. Plus the less said about Runarsson the better.

Best XI – Leno, VVD, Cancelo, Azpil, JWP, Gundogan, Bruno, Maddison, DCL, Bamford

-------------------------------------

Tiny

First 5 picks

1st picks odd choices allowed Tiny to monster the first 4 picks. Kane, Sterling, Pulisic and Alisson are decent proven point getters (Pulisic is a little high for my liking but yknow…) and then lacazette happens. I know strikers were disappearing but Wilson, IanNacho, Martial, Wood, Adams, Maupay….were all still available. Solid start though.

Next 20

Erm….Fuck the rest of this squad this is all about 7th pick. Gylfi child fucker Sigurdsson. Dafuq Tiny, really odd choice. Guess you probably met him in the queues at Disney and thought you’d throw your boy a bone and pick him up but this is not a good look. Imagine having to explain this to your daughters when they are looking through all your old squad photos later in life. ‘I remember this guy dad, he used to sit outside our nursery and talk to us from his car window…….’

Best XI – Alisson, Ogbonna, Mee, Konsa, Sterling, Neto, Pulisic, Fornals, Tielemans, Kane, Jesus

-------------------------------------

Dev

First 5

By virtue of 1st pick buckling under the pressure and Tony going all noncesensical on us Dev was essentially 1st pick in this draft. Let us not forget that. By the by though he delivered a strong opening quintet. Lukaku, Sancho, Grealish, Watkins and Saka are some solid great picks but all come with a danger warning. Lukaku will score but will he take time to settle and will the weight of his pricetag hang heavy? Is Sancho actually any good and how will he adapt to being back in the Prem? Will Grealish settle into the citeh team and style of play? Will Watkins see his playing time cut due to big shiny Ings? Can Saka reach his potential playing in such a shit team? Could be an excellent first 5 but could also be a series of massive disappointments.

Next 20

On first impressions the rest of this squad is ok but in classic Dev style he’s just ignored his midfield

And so doesn’t give his first XI many places to go as he’s loaded on defenders but only a handful are any good and this team very much feels like a very strong starting XI but a few injuries could derail an expected title challenge.

Best XI – Lloris, Coufal, Godfrey, T.Silva, Konate, Sancho, Grealish, Saka, Lukaku, Watkins, Iheanacho

-------------------------------------

Mary

First 5

Something very sweet happened here, Mary looked at older bro Warrens winning team from last year and thought yes, that’s what I’ll do. Salah, Ings, Dias, Antonio and Wilson is very striker heavy (with all 3 arguably better placed to repeat last seasons scoring than Bamford) and so Mary set his stool out early, go big on attack or go home. The last of big boy top 5 as it starts to getting a trickier after 4th pick and 1 or 2 wildcards need to be drawn but Mary delivered.

Next 20

Hames is a bold choice but I guess Sigs already gone who else are you picking from Everton? Fell into the Traore trap of thinking he’s actually any good when there were much better Volves players still about. Solid extra time picks with Torres, Areola and Christiansen so overall a decent squad. In fact could have the best XI in the game this season.

Best XI - Areola, Dias, Reguilon, Rudiger, Salah, Pogba, Torres, Zaha, Ings, Wilson, Antonio

-------------------------------------

Ed

First 5

Middle of the pack is where you have to think a little more. Son, Havertz and Raphina are 3 good attacking opening picks but Ed went off piste with the next two picks and got the defenders in early. This is smart, why pick up 3rd rate strikers when 1st rate defenders are available. I think here 4 of 5 of his picks are going to be point goliaths and Raphina will be just great. Arguably my favourite first 5 picks of the draft.

Next 20

Adding Mahrez, Walker, Pereira to those first 5 sets up a lovely team and maybe A.Armstrong could be an excellent punt….well he needs to be because Benteke is shit and Tammy left the country not 24 hours after joining this lot. Still Cantwell has nice hair. (I forgot St.Max is a striker this year.

Best XI – Raya, Robertson, Shaw, Walker, Pereira, Son, Havertz, Raphina, Pepe, Bailey, St. Max

-------------------------------------

Niall

First 5

Mane, Cavani, Digne, Jimenez, Barnes. This feels a very un-Brophy first 5 picks, not sure why and maybe it’s just me but something feels off. Digne at 3rd pick feels incredibly high and there is a weird feeling of safeness about these first 5 whilst also seemingly risky. Predicting Cavani’s playing time will be tough and that doesn’t usually make a 2nd pick, will Jimenez be the same lad after the head breaking? I’m sitting this in ok first 5, could be marvellous, could be outscored by picks 6-25.

Next 20

Tierney, Romero, Stones, Sarr, Mendy, Benhrama and Gray are all good FFY picks in the eyes of this typer. In fact call me crazy but I’d rate picks 6-10 over 1-5 with the latter picks being much more what I’d expect from Niall. Firpo was worth the punt but you can see the point he loses interest around pick 15. Overall some smart pick ups from pick 6.

Best XI – Mendy, Digne, Tierney, Stones, Romero, Barnes, Sarr, Benhrama, Mane, Jimenez, Cavani

-------------------------------------

Lee

First 5

Pretty happy with how this went even if I did pull the trigger on the keeper very early. My thinking was no point contesting for strikers in 7th pick so try and hit up the midfielders early. Could have added another scoring midfielder in 5th pick but if Martinez can have a similar season again there weren’t many midfielders left who can get near his score.

Next 20

Maguire, Cresswell, Canos, ESR and adams followed and again I was happy and then I got bored and the whole draft fell off a cliff. Olise, Sema, Webster, Bergwijn, Balogun, Chambers…..all pointless players that were picked whilst there were better players available from their clubs. Traore at 23 could be a steal but overall a team that lacks depth and rests on some regularly injured shoulders.

Best XI – Martinez, Maguire, Cresswell, James, KDB, Mount, Jota, ESR, Townsend, Traore, Richarlison

-------------------------------------

Warren

First 5

Now this feels familiar and last year I was shown to massively wrong for doubting Warren and his squad building but I’m really unsure about everything that’s been done here. Trent as a first pick is bold, Auba at second is sort of understandable, Toney at 3 feels earlier and desperate, Ederson at 4 seems like a man need to know he has some consistent points and Buendia at 5 is the sort of punt you have to make near the bottom of the draft. A spine built with his positional picks and it makes sense to want to have your top 5 players giving you options all round the pitch. (edit, Auba is a striker again so not brilliant)

Next 20

So yeah, this doesn’t feel great, Moura at 6, Pukki, Werner, Rice, Fernandinho, Hoijberg….just all not great FFY players. I know he’s 8th, last years winner and a maverick who pulls magic out of nowhere but on initial inspection it feels like he’s overthought the position and his strategy.

Best XI – Ederson, Trent, Alonso, Wan-Bissaka, Moura, Harrison, Greenwood, Buendia, Auba, Toney + 1 other.

-------------------------------------

Chris

First 5

What can I say other than Vardy, Rashford, Firmino, Foden and Bowen is a very good opening 5 picks from 9th pick. He should be delighted with that. There is potential for plenty of points and I would say it’s the most solid 9th pick first 5 I’ve seen for a while. It’s safe but sometimes you need that at the end of the draft table.

First 5

Next 20

I think Chris has played 9th really well here, it’s solid, it’s predictable but I genuinely believe he won’t be 9th come the end of the season. Adding Chilwell, Pope, Neves, McGinn, Keane, Ayew is not spectacular but very solid and will bring in a decent amount of points. I think in 9th you can either wildcard it or play outrageously safe and sensible and Chris has nailed the latter.

Best XI – Pope, Chilwell, Keane, Vestergaard, Rashford, Foden, Bowen, Dallas, McGinn, Vardy, Firmino

Matt

Who knows what happened here. Shame.
